Conduct workshop and field inspection to assess and plan for removal of two legacy derelict vessels in American Samoa.
The project brought salvage experts from the US Navy and private firms to American Samoa to work with local experts in order to inspect, assess and prepare plans for the removal of two legacy derelict vessels, the F/V Jui Man #3 on Tutuila Island and the F/V Young Kwan on Aunu’u Island. Multiple (2-4) wreck removal options were evaluated for each vessel, including options for salvage method, equipment needs, labor and safety implications and disposal method. The overall recommendation based on the likely challenge and damage of moving the heavy debris over local habitat was to cut wreckage apart in-place and fly by helicopter for at-sea disposal, which would be a significant cost. The process and outputs were detailed in a report completed by the project team.
